You asked, we answered: stargazing is back at West Rattlesnake! The shortening days and early nightfall may make this time of year seem dreary, but they’re a great chance to see the stars and still get home at a reasonable hour. We’ll hike up to the summit for a stellar view of constellations, planets, and other celestial phenomena, as well as the beautiful vista of Squam Lake at night. The SLA will provide a viewing scope and binoculars, and amateur astronomers are encouraged to bring binoculars or a small scope as well—keeping in mind that it will have to be carried 0.9 miles up to the West Rattlesnake summit. Don’t miss one of our last Adventure Ecology programs of the year!
All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults. For more information and to register, please use the link above.
Participants are encouraged to bring extra layers to stay cozy on the summit. Snacks, water, and a warm beverage in a thermos can help participants stay comfortable as well. This is an evening hike, so a headlamp or flashlight will be needed – the SLA has a limited amount of flashlights to lend for the hike.

Audience:  All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults.

This Week’s SLA LRCC Guide:

Peter Laskin is a recent college graduate (who did not major in astronomy) and recovering space enthusiast. As a child, he wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up, but in growing up he learned that becoming an astronaut is way more work than becoming a science educator. He did a lot of stargazing as a kid through public viewing nights at a local observatory, and is excited to share with you what he can remember.
