Loon Mountain Places New South Peak Lift Towers by Helicopter
Lift tower installation brings Loon closer to opening New England's newest terrain, South Peak

Lincoln, NH - Last week Loon Mountain, in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains, took another big step closer to the December opening of South Peak, its newest terrain. The resort flew and installed by helicopter 32 lift towers. These towers make up the Lincoln Express high-speed quad and the Tote Road Connector quad chairlifts.

Each lift tower is approximately 40 ft. high and weighs approximately 16,000 lbs. Both lifts are being constructed and installed by Doppelmayr, CTEC. Doppelmayr has previously installed Loon Mountain's North Peak Express Quad and its Kancamagus Quad.

Twenty-one towers sit on the face of South Peak, comprising the lift line for the Lincoln Express. The new lift can now be seen from nearby downtown Lincoln. Eleven towers are in place along the Tote Road, which connects the existing terrain on Loon Mountain to the summit of South Peak. The Tote Road Quad will take skiers and snowboarders in both directions, to and from the summit of South Peak.

"The sound of a helicopter flying overhead always awakens the community," commented Loon Mountain General Manager Rick Kelley. "For us, this was another exciting sign of the progress we've made at South Peak over the past few months. Plus it's very dramatic to watch — from attaching the cable from the helicopter to the towers, to the actual flying of the towers, to the steadying of the towers in their final positions along the lift line."

In addition to the two new lifts, Loon Mountain will open three new trails—about 50 acres of terrain—on South Peak for the upcoming ski season. These trails are only 35% of the total planned South Peak expansion to take place over the next 3-5 years.

Loon Mountain will begin making snow November 1, weather permitting, and plans to open for skiing and snowboarding Wednesday, November 21. The new lifts and trails of South Peak are scheduled to open in mid-December. South Peak’s official opening celebration is Thursday, December 21.
