Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is now more accessible for visitors with hearing impairment, thanks to a generous donation from Hear Clear, LLC, and support provided by the Finlay-Lamb Family Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation–Lakes Region. The new FM and electro-magnetic induction loop systems now available for use at the Science Center will provide clearer hearing, better accessibility, and improved communication. Northern Rail Trail in Merrimack County To Reach East Andover in August 2007

One of the prettiest rail trails in New Hampshire will be extended this summer from Andover to East Andover village. The Northern Rail Trail in Merrimack County now runs 3.4 miles from the quaint and historic Victorian rail road station and museum in Potter Place to Switch Road in Andover. It criss-crosses the meanders of the Blackwater River through cornfields and wetlands with views of Mount Kearsage to the south. By the end of August two more miles should be added, taking the rail trail to East Andover. Along the way one passes by, through or over a classic wooden covered bridge, two old railroad trestle bridges, a swimming hole, a playground, ball field, Horseshoe Pond and the shores of Highland Lake. Famed New England Locomotive to be Resotred - Arrives at Railroad in Lincoln. A famous diesel electric locomotive, perhaps the most photographed in New England, has been slated for preservation and recently arrived at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH. Locomotive 1921 (ex-MBTA 1921, ex-Burlington Northern 1921, ex-Great Northern 1921) is a GP9 painted in the famous Boston and Maine/Maine Central "Minute Man" scheme. Lakes Region Association conducts Winnipesaukee Boat Traffic Census - On Monday, July 3rd, 1,570 active boats and personal watercraft were counted on Lake Winnipesaukee in order to establish a baseline determination of boaters during the July 4th, 2006 holiday weekend. The Lakes Region Association, the largest tourism marketing organization in Central NH, funded the study and worked with Lakes Region Aerial Photography of Belmont to survey the boat traffic. Disc course in Barnstead. New spin on golf. Disc diehards have another course on which to test their golfing skills - Nik Groleau calls Tiger Woods's sport "ball golf." He won't concede that golf is played only with clubs and a little white ball. In Groleau's sport, disc golf, he throws Frisbee-like discs at a basket instead of striking a ball toward a hole. The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center announced today that it has recently hired Mary Ellen Downing of Meredith, as its new Retail and Admissions Manager. Downing has been charged with transforming the Science Center’s gift shop, “The Howling Coyote,” to better reflect the 40-year old non-profit’s mission. Under Downing’s guidance, it will now offer more locally made gifts and crafts. In addition, all of its merchandise will either feature imagery related to the Science Center’s on-site wildlife, or have a direct connection to the natural world of New Hampshire. More..
