Welcome to the "Official" Lakes Region Travel Writer's Media web site
AROUND HERE, WATER IS ALWAYS PART OF THE PICTURE. Early native Americans called Lake Winnipesaukee "The Smile of the Great Spirit." The name still seems appropriate today.
With 283 miles of shoreline and 274 habitable islands, Winnipesaukee is the centerpiece of the Lakes Region. Recreational activities abound: boating, swimming, cruises, ice skating, ice fishing and snowmobiling - along with some truly spectacular scenery - make this a four-season vacation destination. Winnipesaukee is surrounded by three mountain ranges: Ossipee, Belknap and Squam. Also visible is Sandwich Ridge and the Presidential Range, including Mount Washington.
Explore the area's numerous villages - each one offers something different: Weirs Beach has arcades and boardwalks, a waterslide, restaurants and an activity center; Meredith is a restored mill village where you can browse through antique, art and craft galleries; and Wolfeboro is a picture perfect New England village, right down to its historic Main Street. Center harbor, Melvin Village, Alton Bay and the other towns in the Lakes Region all have their own special flavor, as well.
All communities have public parks and docks (come by car, boat or sea plane!), and many feature activities such as fireworks displays and band concerts throughout the year. All offer a variety to exceptional dining and lodging options.
Whatever your age, whatever your interest, whatever the season - you're going to love it here!!
