Suggested paddles including paddling the shoreline of Center Harbor Bay; paddle out to and around the private islands, half-mile, one mile, black cat, blueberry, beaver and three-mile islands; paddle the shoreline south to Leavitt Beach in Meredith for a stretch, swim and a snack. Directions to Weirs Beach: Turn left out of Canoe’s parking lot and follow Route 25 to the lights in Meredith. At the intersection of Route 3 and 25, turn left onto Route 3. Follow for 5 minutes down to Weirs Beach. At the Weirs Beach sign, turn left and park along the Boardwalk and find your boat at the MS Mount Washington’s docks. (Travel time: 20 minutes)
2-4pm Mount Washington Cruises – M/V Sophie C
The Motor Vessel (M/V) Sophie C., the oldest floating post office in the United States, is also the only U.S. Mailboat on an inland waterway. Each season she provides mail service on the lake, a tradition dating back to 1892.
Both of Sophie's daily mail runs takes her to 5 islands where her staff delivers mail to the island residents and summer camps. In addition to being a full-service post office where these residents may purchase postal supplies and stamps, Sophie also has a collection of ice cream novelty treats and snacks for sale. A daily ice cream bar or popsicle has become quite a summer tradition for her island friends.
Passengers aboard the Sophie C. are invited to fill out complimentary Sophie C. postcards and mail them right on board. Perhaps you can surprise a friend or relative with mail sent from a boat, complete with Sophie's own unique, collectible cancellation stamp! *The M/V Sophie C. cruises from June 15 through September 8.
